Cedarvale - Humewood Information
The Cedarvale and Humewood Neighbourhoods are located in Central Toronto. Bordered by Bathurst Street to the east, Eglinton Avenue to the north, Winnett Avenue to the west and north of St. Clair Avenue to the south. The neighbourhood is often referred to by each distinct name with the north half of the neighbourhood being Cedarvale and the south as Humewood. Cedarvale is also considered part of the Forest Hill Neighbourhood.
Cedarvale is named for the many cedar trees that once blanketed the ravine, the "vale" in this area, Cedarvale was almost lost in the late 1960's at the proposed construction of the Spadina Expressway. Residents in many neighbourhoods helped put a stop to the expressway, thus retaining some of the city's most beautiful natural landscape. Cedarvale Ravine and Park is commonly used to for dog walkers, runners, and students returning from neighbouring schools. The large open fields are heavily used by the community for everything from cricket games to flying kites. The park benefits from its proximity to the Beltline trail to the north, and part of the Nordheimer Ravine to the south, these two join together to form a large trail system through midtown Toronto. The Humewood neighbourhood is sometimes nicknamed the "Woods" because of its many streets that end in "woods".
In the late 1960’s Toronto planned to construct a highway that would run from Highway 401 to downtown Toronto via the Cedarvale Ravine and Spadina Road. Local Residents protested and successfully focused public opinion against the expressway, thus having the subway and expressway end at Eglinton Avenue.
There is a large Jewish community situated in Cedarvale and Humewood,(although mostly in Cedarvale), having been established around the Holy Blossom Temple and Beth Tzedec Synagogue. Primarily built between 1920 and 1950, the homes in Cedarvale are found in many styles: from modest starter homes and walk-up apartment buildings to large homes on oversized properties backing onto the ravine. Susan Macarz, Broker with Re/Ultimate, has sold and bought several properties in the area for her clients. Her expertise and knowledge of the area and homes has been beneficial for them all. It is a fabulous location to raise young families while still being close to all the downtown core and entertainment districts of Toronto. The neighbourhood is one that most residents, if they move, generally stay within the area. Cedarvale Community School is considered to be one of the top Toronto public schools.
Shopping along Eglinton Avenue West provides residents with some of the most glamorous boutiques in Toronto. The Cedarvale Ravine is part of the Belt Line Railway path and is popular with people who enjoy walking, cycling and even cross country skiing in the winter. Public, Catholic and Private Jewish schools are in the area. Bus service connects commuters with subway stations in the Toronto network, and the Allen Expressway and Highway 401 is just minutes away by car. Yorkdale Shopping Centre is a short ride up the Allen Expressway.
