York Mills Information
York Mills is bordered east to Leslie Street, west to Yonge St and south of Hwy. 401 to just north of Windfields Park which runs east from Bayview Avenue just south of York Mills Road. It is located in the former municipality of North York. This neighbourhood encompasses Hogg's Hollow, St. Andrews, Windfields, and Denlow, which will be dealt with in another tab in this web site. The land east of Bayview was developed by E.P.Taylor, and who donated his personal home on Bayview Avenue, south of York Mills Road, to the Canadian Centre for Advanced Film Studies. He once had a horse farm on what is now Windfields Park.
York Mills began as a neighbourhood of saw mills in 1804.It was part of the Town of York, thus the "York" and "Mills". It consisted of a distillery, a tannery, a blacksmith shop, three churches, a school, a post office and the James Hogg Tavern (1853), which is still standing today, became the Jolly Miller Tavern and today is called The Miller Tavern. St. John's Anglican Church is also still standing, being built in 1816 as a log church, and rebuilt into the white brick church in 1844. The church bells at St. John's still chime at noon each day.
York Mills became a residential neighbourhood in the 1930's on the ridge near the St. John's Anglican Church and south of York Mills Rd. to the Hedgewood Road area. A private school, St. Andrews College, a private boys school owned the land east of Old Yonge St. to Bayview Avenue. The college moved to Aurora in 1924 and the land was then purchased by St. Andrews Estates which operated a championship golf course until the 1950's when the land was sold to developers. Many street names are still named from the golf course---Tournament Park, Links and Lower Links Rd. and Foursome Rd. Susan Macarz, Broker with Re/Max Ultimate, lives in this neighbourhood. Her children all grew up here and went to the local schools. There is still a ravine area left from the golf course that people use to walk, walk dogs, or toboggan in the winter.
Today, York Mills still maintains lush landscaped properties and beautiful homes, and yet has the peaceful surroundings of a country setting, while minutes away from all the major highways and transportation. Centrally located, York Mills is only 20 minutes by car to downtown or to the airport. TTC and subway are close by. And shopping is easy with the York Mills Plaza at the corner of York Mills Road and Bayview Avenue, or neighbourhood shops such as in Bayview Village Shopping Centre, Don Mills Shopping Centre, Longo's Plaza to name a few. The local plaza has two banks--Royal Bank of Canada, and TD/Canada Trust, a Shoppers Drug Mart, the best chocolate shop in Toronto--Swiss Master Chocolatier, Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream, various retail shops, Second Cup coffee, Nortown Meats which sells fresh meats and fish, a Restaurant - Richtree, and Metro grocery store. On a hot summers night, many of the local residents sit outside in the plaza, relaxing and enjoying a coffee or ice cream.
The York Mills area remains an area which boasts large properties, luxury custom homes, executive ranch style bungalows, and house values that are still "reasonable" for Toronto. New luxury condominiums have been built along Yonge St south of Hwy. 401, and there are condominium townhomes in the area as well. There are also some rental apartment buildings and townhomes in the neighbourhood. The public school system is one of the best in the Toronto area. Owen Public School has French immersion, as does Dunlace P.S., St. Andrews Jr. High School feeds into York Mills Collegiate, as does Windfields Junior High School. Etienne Brule is the local French High School. There are local parks and trails, as well as recreational areas. This is truly a neighbourhood that is child friendly and family orientated, while still allowing for the privacy of many high profile residents.
