St. Andrews Information
The St. Andrews Neighbourhood is also found within the York Mills Neighbourhood, and whose boundaries are east of Old Yonge Street, north of York Mills Road and West of Bayview Avenue and south of Hwy. 401. Some maps show the St. Andrews Neighbourhood blending eastwards into the Windfields Neighbourhood of York Mills.
St. Andrews Neighbourhood, may have been named after the patron saint of Scotland, St.Andrew, however, the land originally was the location of St. Andrews College, a private boys school founded in 1899. The school was in a house named Chestnut Park that was previously owned by Sir David Macpherson. In 1905 the school moved to Rosedale, until 1924 when it moved to Aurora. The land was sold to St. Andrews Estates, which was a beautiful championship golf course. In the 1950's the St. Andrews Estates Golf Course was sold to developers who built many of the homes that are still standing today. Large lots, ravine properties were the draw. Two storey homes, ranch bungalows, smaller bungalows, townhomes and rental apartments are typical for the area. Today, many homes have been torn down and new luxurious "monster" homes have been built in the area.
Another landmark in the St. Andrews Neighbourhood is the site of the original St. John's Anglican Church, whose bells still chime at noon. Built in 1816 as a log church, it was rebuilt in 1844 and is still a beacon of years gone by.
The mature trees, the meandering roads, the parks, tennis courts, ravines and the Neighbourhood proximity to both Owen Public School and St. Andrews Jr. High School are the big draw for young families. Susan Macarz, Broker, with Re/Max Ultimate, lives in this Neighbourhood within the York Mills Neighbourhood, and her children all went to St. Andrews Jr. High School, and then to York Mills Collegiate Institute. Knollwood Rd. and Toba Rd. traverse the ravine that is left from the old golf course property. It is not unusual to see people tobogganing down the gentle slopes at Knollwood into the ravine, or for cars to park on Knollwood for people who bring their dogs for their "daily constitutional exercise" in the ravine.
There is a TTC bus that winds through this Neighbourhood that goes directly to the York Mills Subway Station, or it is a short walk to the main roads...York Mills, Bayview Ave., and to the York Mills Plaza. And it is minutes to the main highways. The St. Andrews and York Mills Neighbourhood location is ideal for accessing the airport or downtown. Both can be driven in about 20 minutes from this Neighbourhood.
