Windfields Information
The Windfields Neighbourhood is found within the York Mills Neighbourhood, boundaries are Leslie Street to the East and south of Hwy 401 to north of Lawrence Avenue and midway to Bayview Avenue to the West. Windfields includes a maze of streets that weave through the area until they end either in a ravine or park, or access a main arterial road. This Neighbourhood is also referred to as York Mills Gardens. Originally E.P. Taylor's Windfields Farm, an estate that was subdivided for housing 1968, and thirty acres of his farm was donated to become Windfields Park. E.P. Taylor's mansion was donated to the Canadian Centre for Advanced Film Studies which fronts onto Bayview Avenue. Windfields Farm was famous as one of the top thoroughbred racing stables in North America with Northern Dancer being the first Canadian horse to win the Kentucky Derby. More...
The homes in the area are quite varied, with entry-level townhomes,semi-detached homes, ranch style bungalows, two storey homes as well as luxury custom built homes of over 5000 sq.ft. The area boasts good schools both regular curriculum or French immersion. Susan Macarz, Broker with Re/Max Ultimate, has both lived in this area as well as sold many homes in the Windfields and York Mills area. The neighbourhood is child and family friendly with parks, tennis courts, Banbury Community Centre, and shopping. Longos Plaza has the Longo's grocery store, as well as a Shoppers Drug Mart, bank, McDonalds and a variety of other restaurants and retail stores. York Mills Plaza is a short drive located at Bayview Ave. and York Mills Rd., as is the Don Mills Shopping centre and Bayview Village Shopping Centre.
Windfields Park runs through the centre of this neighbourhood, and has a walking trail that follows the course of the Wilket Creek. A nature park filled with trees that are over 100 years old, a pond, marsh area and has many species of birds and wildlife. On the north end of this park, is York Mills Park that provides an access to the Windfields Park, and houses a baseball field as well as the York Mills Arena that has an ice skating rink for all kinds of skating activities. To the south end of Windfields Park, is Edwards Gardens, one of Toronto's prettiest and famous parks. It is not unusual to find wedding parties being photographed in the park in the spring, summer or fall months.
