Thornhill Neighbourhood Tidbits

Spring Farm - Crestwood - Yorkhill

Spring Farm-Crestwood-Yorkhill is a Neighbourhood within Thornhill, and has a large predominantly Jewish population.  These areas are dotted with Synagogues, Community Centres, Private Schools, Private Jewish Learning Schools for all religious affiliations, Churches that date back to the early 1800’s, libraries, stores and malls.

The main Spring Farm-Crestwood-Yorkhill Market Place Shopping Centre is located at the corner of Hilda and Clark Avenue.  Within this plaza, one can find one of the best Kosher Restaurants - Miami Grill.  The food is wonderful and the service is attentive as well. My Zaidy’s Pizza is also a busy and popular establishment in this plaza.  A Shoppers Drug Mart, a Second Cup, and Sobeys are the main draw to the Plaza.  Israel’s, a Jewish Judaica store is also found within this plaza. There are other retail stores and several professional medical offices as well.  This plaza is an easy walk from most of the Neighbourhood.

Close by, is the Garnett A. Williams Community Centre, where one has various family orientated programs including, fitness, and an indoor swimming pool. It is a wonderful venue in which to meet other families and socialize with children.

Parks dot the Neighbourhood…on Spring Gate Blvd. there are two parks…one is pesticide free which is the Hetherington Parkette, located at 299 Spring Gate Blvd.  The other is linked with the Arnold House, Gallanough Park located at 21 Springfield Way. It has a lovely large park in which to picnic, play or just relax. It is also linked with Gallanough Resource Centre. This Resource Centre library is a wonderful place for families as well as having programs for younger children. Oakbank Park  located at 250 Centre Street is a treat and unique for a place to watch the birds and geese and even Mallard ducks and just plain relax.  Country in the City.

At Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue, one finds various retail stores, including Amadeus, an incredible bakery with the most delectable cakes that are a work of art. Susan Macarz, Broker, Re/Max Ultimate Realty Inc., Brokerage, has been on the receiving end of many of their wonderful pastries! There is a the Bathurst Clark Resource Library at 900 Clark Ave. W, found further west, at the South Promenade entrance and a fire station as well.  The Promenade Mall, is located on the south west corner of Bathurst Street and Centre Street. It has movie theatres, TNT an Asian supermarket, various retail stores including Old Navy and Sears, restaurants such as the Pickle Barrel, and on the outside there are several shops as well—a Swiss Chalet, and Cynthia’s Chinese Restaurant for wonderful Chinese dishes. Cynthia’s is a wonderful restaurant to go to celebrate special occasions and the wait staff are all dressed in traditional robes of an era gone by. Yum!  A free standing building housing the liquor store, the  LCBO is located here as well.

Just further North, on the North West corner of  Bathurst  and Centre, one finds the Smart Centers Plaza. The main retailer is Walmart. Several retail stores such as Fashion Wear, a lovely women’s boutique that has its main store in MontrealSusan Macarz, Broker, with Re/Max Ultimate Realty, Brokerage often shops at Fashion Wear. There is a Roger’s store, The Running Room, North Boys…which is a great find for finding dress suits for young boys and young men…The Shoe Company and many other retailers found here. For dining, Susan Macarz  enjoys meeting friends and eating at Mezza Notte for Italian feasts.  Boneyard Grill is located here for ribs, steaks, chicken and burgers…There is also Bagel World, Starbucks, Subway, Asian and Sushi restaurants, and the best ice cream store North of Centre StreetMarble Slab Creamery. Well worth the drive to taste…Yummy. Of course there are Dentists, Doctor’s offices, a yoga studio and a spa…the list goes on.

There are other retail outlets located along Centre Street, such as the destination, Centre Street Deli where they steam their own corned beef and pastrami’s and is a great place for any meal -- breakfast, lunch and/or an early dinner.

At the intersection of Atkinson and Yonge, on the South East corner is the wonderful Octagon Restaurant.  The best steaks and seafood are found here.  Caesar salad is made to order at your table. The Octagon Restaurant is another great dining venue for that special occasion.  Just South of the Octagon is the newer Paramount restaurant, a family friendly venue along with several other retail establishments.  Whatever your pleasure in food, you can find it in Thornhill.

This neighbourhood is quickly growing and developing. It seems to have it all---great schools, parks, stores, restaurants, community centres, a family residential area and newer condominiums, transportation.

Thornhill has history, and is a wonderful Neighbourhood to call….HOME.
